My Dog Might Have Worms Can This Hurt My 3 Month Baby?

A friend has been watching our dog because I just had a baby and we live in apts. However, she thinks our dog might have worms so my husband wants the dog back to watch it closely to see if it does have worms. If the dog does have worms can it hurt my 3 month old son?

Yes, when the dog sits or lies around the house the microscopic worms can crawl out of his anus and get all over the house. I know this b/c both of my girls had to be treated for pin worms and we found out they got it from the dog. Bo to the vet and get some good worm treatment, it will take a good week for them to clear up and then everything should be fine. Best of luck to ya!

I seriously doubt the worms could cause any problems. I have had dogs all my life and I have been through about everything there is with dogs. You baby would have to basically eat the dog poo for anything to happen. Dogs get worms for other dogs because many dogs (especially puppies and mother dogs ) eat poo. So as long as your child hasn’t eaten any dog poo your baby is fine.
I know being a mom can be scary and we worry about all sorts of things. However, this is not one of those things that should concern you.

Worm the dog. You can get over the counter products for a variety of worms. If he has a visible worm hanging, chances are it’s a tapeworm, and you’ll have to get medicine for that from a vet. Worms are contagious, and any contact your dog has with the baby can pass them, as well as the baby being on the floor, the ground, or any place the dog has been in the past 6 months! I would take the dog to the vet, get it tested for what kinds of worms it might have, and treat it for just those types. It is pretty easy to treat worms, and even a healthy looking, fat dog can have them. It is also not real expensive to get the dog tested and treated. Good luck, and enjoy the dog and the baby!

Yes, it could be harmful to your child…and lets face it, is it worth the risk? My suggestion is to get the dog checked out by the vet and see if a loving family or friend can dog sit until the all clear is anounced….. I would just not risk it at all – when babies are ill it is such a stress and time of anxiety, so I would rather be safe than sorry. Goodluck xx

Well, your son (as well as you and your husband) IS able to contract worms from a dog. However, it isn’t very easy. Normally, there needs to be contact with the feces for it to spread. Be aware though that when dogs have worms, sometimes they cannot control their bowels as well. This could cause a problem. Take the dog to the vet, they will test his poop and get him taken care of. My vet even offers to house the dog while he is getting rid of worms. It’s worth looking into……because they are GROSS!!!!

depends on what kind of worms.
certain kinds are transmitted by ingesting segments of the worm itself & can be transmitted to humans (tapeworms).
a kid can also get worms from soil that’s been contaminated within the past couple years.

There is no way your dog could transfer worms to your baby or harm your baby. Get your dog some medication though before the problem persists.

Yes if your baby has contact with the dogs butt or feces it could be at risk of getting the worms.
Your better off having a vet treat the worms and then bring the dog home.

Doctors say no, I say yes. I think they can pass from animals to people. Just don’t let the dog around the baby until you get rid of them.
