Can I Use Eucalyptus Extract As A Pig Dewormer? What About Star Apple Leaves Extract?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

“For some years Eucalyptus-chloroform was employed as one of the remedies in the tropics for hookworm, but it has now been almost universally abandoned as an inefficient anthelmintic”
“In veterinary practice, Eucalyptus Oil is administered to horses in influenza, to dogs in distemper, to all animals in septicaemia. It is also used for parasitic skin affections”http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/…
Star apple, Chrysophyllum cainito is used as anti-diarrheic and anti-fatigue http://www.liberherbarum.com/Pn5652.HTM
None of these has property as pig dewormer.
To find out a herbal medicine, one has to know what sort of worms the pigs have. Tapeworms need different treatment from roundworms.
For this publication star apple was tested. Sorry that the abstract only is available, but it shows the reasons for the negative results:http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob…

Help .. Its’ About My Dog!! :(?

hello, i have a beautiful rottweiler who is 7 in under 1 month’s time. she has always been very healthy, beautiful coat, loves walks and her food. every year when the season changes from winter to summer she starts biteing her back and constantly scratches it, this has happened since she was 1 years old and every year the vet says’ the same thing, that she is illergic to the natural changes in the air and we are always given the same cream and told exactly the same thing.
the same thing has started to happen again (1 week ago) and this time it is awful, she is always flead and de wormed but she seems to have fleas’ really bad and nothing is getting rid of them which must be awful for her and must be driving her mad, i’ve taken her to the vet and yet again they said the same thing so i changed vets and they said the same, the fleas are awful and none of the treatments are working not even the ones’ from the vets, please help the fleas are awful i do not know what to do, could i have some advice or if this has happened to your dog before?
she is very well looked after, i have had her for 7 years, she has 4 walks a day, fed all the right food and has acsess to water 24/7 and had alot of love and cuddles all day every day and is a much loved family member so it is not nice for me to see her like this and the vets’ arnt much use it feels like they are happy taking £150 off me each time i visit and each time i’m given cream!
sorry for the long question but answers would be fab!
xx

How Contagious Are Dog’s Tapeworms? (worried About Me (i’m Pregnant) And The Other Family Pets)?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

My husband and I just adopted a dog yesterday
a 7 year old basset hound
the shelter said that he was treated with a worm preventative
-however- he def has tapeworms
this seems to be his only medical issue as of yet
its not a problem for treatment:
we already have an appointment with our family vet for Friday at 3 to micro-chip him so we’ll just have to have the vet prescribe a treatment then
my only questions are
1- in the mean time (between now and his vet appointment Friday) how can I be sure that I (since I’m in my third trimester of pregnancy) and my other family pets (we have one cat and three hamsters) do not contract the tapeworm?
2- how can I make him most comfortable until after the tapeworm is taken care of? is there anything we can or should do at home to make him feel more comfortable?

Questions About My Dog’s Health And The Vet?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I have a 10 year old German shepherd mix named Aireon and he was living with a family member while I attended school. when I came back I had learned that he had had an allergic reaction to something and all the flaking, hair loss, and scabs were from the infection.
So I reimbursed my aunt $143 for getting him treated while I was away.
But the scabs, flaking and hair loss never went away after 2 weeks.
I took him back to a different vet and they said it was possibly Scabies. Even though he was UTD on heartworm they said it is still recommended that he is tested for heartworm. because the medication for scabies will kill a dog if they are treated for scabies and have heart worm. And she said if he did have heart worms it would be best to put him down.
So he got tested and we won’t know until Thursday if he is good or not.
Finally My questions are:
1. if for some bizarre reason he has a bad case of heart worms, would it be easy to treat?
2. Is there anything I can do about the other vet because she said all that was wrong was an allergic reaction, and it never was?
3. If by chance he had a mild case of heart worms, would it be less stressful on him to put him down instead of waiting out the treatments?
I love Aireon to death and the very thought of putting him depresses me, but at the same time I don’t want him to suffer, if he is.
Sorry it was so long! and thanks for your answers!

Does Anyone Know About Dog Tapeworms?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

i posted this question before and a lot of people just yelled at me to take her to the vet….. yes, of course i am taking her to the vet, i just wanted to educate myself a little bit first.
i just adopted my dog from miami animal shelter 2 days ago. They where going to put her to sleep because she’d been there for almost a month. Now she’s with us! and we love her.
when i got her they said she had kennel cough so i’ve been treating her for that for a day and a half but i was a bit skeptical when i noticed her coughs didn’t sound dry and one time she even coughed up a little saliva. she is also soo skinny which we attributed to her being a stray and possibly not eating much in the shelter. But today when i was walking her i saw 2 fat little worms in her poop. I had thought she might have worms before but now i know. Also, they told me she was about 2 years old and she’s had a healthy appetite since she’s been here.
my questions are…. 1) what immediately should i do, other than calling the vet?
2) what is the treatment?
3) is it an easy or difficult parisite to get rid of?
4) i’m assuming i should stop giving her the kennel cough meds right?
5) how long does it take to treat?
6) and lastly… are those tapeworms hurting her?? :( i know a little bit about parasites being a ecosystem science and biology major but i don’t really know if she’s in pain or how she feels… any dog owners know???
thanks Luna and I appreciate it
