Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

I know a woman whos puppy died of Parvo the other day. But here’s the thing the pup had already had all of his shots. When they took him to the vet (thinking he had some type of worm) the vet assured them it was Parvo. What are the chances and please provide factual evidence if you can. thanks.

My 5 Month Dog Has Parvo?

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

We just adopted a 5 month old shepherd mix. She came from an awful kill shelter. We thought we saved her, however, three days later at the vet we were told she has the Parvovirus. We’re doing outpatient treatments, etc. at home, I don’t work weekends so I’ve been able to stay with her. My ultimate question is when will we know she’s goign to be better, and here is her history thus far:
*Tuesday night was the last night she ate
*Wednesday she didn’t eat at all. She was lethargic, depressed, might of thrown up a few times. She had diarihea with worms in it and the smell was AWFUL (a common sign of parvo)
*Thursday was the worse. All night every 20 minutes or so she was puking up water, bile, etc. She even puked up a 4 in. round worm (yuck!). She also had a poop and it also stunk to hi heaven.
Meanwhile we’re thinkign it’s teh worms making her this sick. So we take her to the vet on Friday, they tell use she most likely has parvo, they send us to an animal hospital. They want to charge us 2800 bucks for inpatient care just for the weekend. unforutnatly we can’t afford taht, who can. So, we are doign treatment, it started Friday night. She had IV fluids under the skin, antibiotics shot, antivirus shot, anti vomitting shot, worm medication over teh next three days and we have some pills that are taken every 12 hrs that help with bacteria. So here is how she’s been:
Friday night, tried to give her water, puked it up. Rested most of the night.
*Saturday morning she was acting better (Lifting up her head more, wagging her tail a bit etc). The doc said she woudl seeem better and then get worse and that it was going to get worse. However, i’m confused, because since friday shes been doign, in my book ok. So saturday she drank waater and kept it down, wouldnt eat, by the evening time i suppose the anti vommitting wore off and she lost interest in water. she only pooped once, and it was stinky diarehah. we went back to the vet that eveing. she had her iv and shots. Oh by the way, her temp on friday was at 103. yesterday her temp was at 99.7 and 100.4, so that’s gone down. so now we’re at sunday. last night and today she’s been drinking water (not always when offered, but sometimes). She has hardly puked at all shes able to keep everything down, even the pill we had to make her take last night. she kept the worm medicine down, and the only times shes puked since thursday night was twice on friday before her iv etc. and and gagged once or twice in the eveing yesterday. ANYWAYS, i know this is a lot, she’s also keepign down some food. I have a suringe and some baby food (chicken) that shes able to keep down. the doc said it was good to try and get some proteien in her. Shes drinking unflavored pedialite with her water…to me, she’s seems to be doing ok. from what the docs office told us she was goign to be getting worse with the pooping and puking etc, but im wondering if we’ve already been through the worse. Now ofcourse ive asked the vetr all of these questinos more than once, but i like to hear from people who have experience with this. i’m mmore looking for a sign taht shes goign into recovery. she started being sick on wed. or thurs so thats 4 to 5 days of being sick arleayd (ive heard it only lasts 4-8 days). Let me know what you think! If shes getting better i want to be optimistic, but idont wasnt to set myself up for a harder heartbreak, but honest, thanks.

Dog With Parvo, All The Symptoms, But Minor Treatment Seems To Be Getting Better?

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

I have a blue heeler, who we have purchased a 3 way immunization shot for, including parvo. We were ready to give the dog the shot, but the dog developed symptoms of parvo, so we’re holding off on the shot. The pup is 6 months, and has found a way to sneak out of the yard and came in contact with some ruddy looking dogs that are chained in a neighbors yard. He lost his appetite (usually ravenous), wouldn’t touch water, wouldn’t eat, lethargic, stool was bloody, slimy, and smelled terrible, and puked up a frothy looking white and orange mess.
So not being able to afford a trip to the vet for intravenous fluids, we got him some electrolytes that are usually given to horses (very concentrated), and some terramycin (antibiotic to prevent blood infection). Shortly after squirting 35 ml of that solution into his mouth he started eating, and even drank about 16 oz of water. He seems more energetic now, and I’m doubting if it was even parvo, anyone have another ideas?
